DEATH IN ABSENTIA

tw: mention of transphobia

one of the main characters of death in absentia. along with mira she's one of the first characters i made for the story :] the inciting incident of death in absentia is her death.

got engaged right out of high school with her then girlfriend at 19. high school sweethearts sort of thing who wanted to prove their love to eachother and satisfy their families. both get into a decent local college, amaranth is a literature major.

after being engaged for a couple years, she has a falling out with her fiancee when she tried tentatively coming out to her. her now ex-fiancee outed her to her family, and she has not spoken to either since.

finally graduates at 24 and moves out from her hometown. tries to get into a master's program, fails, and from here on out lives off odd teaching jobs and freelance writing gigs.

the year before the story is set she's moved back to her hometown and landed a job as a teaching assistant while she tries for a master's again. not friendless, but has a hard time opening to people.

one night while driving on the highway she gets into a fatal car crash. the next time she's fully conscious is two weeks from now - in the meantime, and in the weird inbetween space of consciousness and memory she meets Mira, who absolutely did not mean to bring Amaranth back with her.

Mira's dismissiviness of Amaranth's entire being pisses her off enough that she spends those two weeks trawling through the worringly desolate and fraught landscape of her mind looking for a way to get back control over life and body - eventually managing, revisitation of traumatic memories nonwithstanding - finding her car in the same ditch it crashed in two weeks ago, barely treated injuries and a slew of angry emails from her boss.
